We’ll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida

We’ll Prescribe You a Cat written by Syou Ishida and translated by E Madison Shimoda is an intriguing book that I just could not put down.  I read the entire thing this afternoon and was so sad at parts and so happy at parts, but left the book with an overall sigh of contentment.  Imagine being given a cat as a prescription by a medical doctor.

The novel was a series of short stories that all were connected by the doctor’s office who prescribed a cat no matter what the clients came in for.  Each person was given a cat as a prescription for a certain number of days with a card explaining about the cat.  Each person had various reactions to the cats, all tended to fall in love with them, but had various struggles to get over with them.  What was interesting was that the cat really did help the people in various ways become more stable.

I noticed that this book is labeled as the first in a series.  Interesting.  The book obviously takes place in Japan and the characters I suspect are characters that the author has met or knows.  Personally, I enjoyed reading about the people and the cats equally.  What a different novel!   We’ll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida was an enjoyable read!
