The Summer We Started Over by Nancy Thayer

The Summer We Started Over by Nancy Thayer was a great read.  The story was about second chances, families and how there is always room for one more.  Each element and character in the story allowed for celebration of life and death.  Nancy Thayer’s ability to build a book that shows meaningful relationships and growth opportunities always makes for a good story.

Eddie and Barrett are two sisters that were divided by chances.  Eddie wanted to see the world and live in a big city.  She works for Dinah Lavender as her girl Friday. Barrett had no desire to leave Nantucket and was determined to open a shop.  Eddie goes home to help with her dad to allow Barrett time to get her store up and running.  Then Dinah shows up and then Dove and Robbie and of course boyfriends.  Suddenly a small family is growing in ways that no one expected after the loss of their mom and the death of their brother.

The Summer We Started Over is great read because of Nancy Thayer’s focus on what makes a family and on building a family.   I found myself both cheering and crying, sometimes at the same time.  The book is a great addition to any summer reading list!
