The Comfort of Ghosts is the last book in the Maisis Dobbs’ series. In this book, Maisie wraps up her life as an investigator and a psychologist. She uses the time to focus on past perceptions and her future while she had a couple of present day mysteries to solve. Why were four kids who knew how to fight secreted away in a mansion? Who was the very ill soldier hiding in the attic? What secrets are left to find about her past? Of course Maisie solved these and other questions.
The Maisie Dobbs era has ended and I am in mourning. I have read all the novels and loved each and every one of them. I cried when her first husband died and she lost her baby. I cried when her mentor died. Yet each book I picked up with happiness knowing I was going to read about Britain in times of trouble with the wars, but knowing that Maisie was going to find the truth and make things right. The books were more like hearing a long story with many cups of tea. The stories always highlighted the strength of the British people, while showing the horrors of war.
I will forever remember the lessons of careful listening, looking within, and asking questions. Maisie lived during a hard time and survived personal losses but she was able to persevere and show true courage. The Comfort of Ghosts by Jacqueline Winspear was a great read and ended a wonderful era of stories to hold.
