The 13th Gift by Joanne Huist Smith

The 13th Gift by Joanne Huist Smith is a wonderful story that is so right this time of year. The book is not long and can be read in one sitting.  This book would also make a great gift for someone.  The novel is nonfiction and is written by the main character.  The memoir encompasses the meaning of family and random acts of kindness.

In the Smith family, the father/husband died unexpectedly and the mother/Jo is dealing with grief and keeping herself and the 3 children safe and together.  Her sons are also doing everything they can to keep grief at bay, while her daughter is actively wishing for Christmas.  Into this strained house, random presents start showing up, each with a line from the 12 Days of Christmas.  It starts when they receive one poinsettia. Then each day something new shows up, not expensive, but thoughtful presents. The random act of kindness helps pull the family together and on a healing pathway.
To me, this book epitomizes the meaning of Christmas with generosity, sharing and kindness. The 13th Gift by Joanna Huist Smith is a great read especially this season.
