Pride Comes Before a Fall by Virginia Heath was the third book in the series called Miss Prentice’s Protegees. The novels are not the traditional historical romances, there is humor, reformist ideas and strong outspoken women. As with the other books in this series the protegees do not easily fit in with society with their free spirit ways. Portia Kendall is a reformer at heart and does not believe that the 3% in England should be so draconian to the rest of the population.
Then she meets Leopold Sloane. He is (aghast) a duke and hires her to keep his two sisters in check. Despite the differences between them class wise, there is another issue, Portia writes for a paper who is looking for reform and often has to work in secret and Leo is a magistrate. It is fun to read how they eventually start to see eye to eye with lots of help from Leo’s mother.
Pride Comes Before a Fall is a hoot. I loved a couple of the scenes, especially the one where Leo has to help her repair her hair and headpiece. I laughed out loud! Pride Comes Before a Fall by Virginia Heath is a fun read!
