How to Kill a Crime Writer by Sarah Lotz was an interesting novel. The main character Nimah, was the daughter of the crime writer who was killed. The part that made it different was that her mother’s main character, Leah. She is a ghost/apparition or some type of spectral image.
Nimah can see her and speak with her, but no one else can (except for the cat.) Leah is “helping” Nimah discover what happened to her mom. There are all sorts of clues, but they do not fit with Nimah’s mother. Leah has a level of sarcasm and clicks her lighter with impunity. Nimah speaks with the neighbors and follows her intuition trying to find answers. It just does not make sense – her mother on a ladder fixing a gutter – she doesn’t like heights.
I loved the quirkiness of the novel. Leah adds a whole new element to the story. I found myself chuckling at some of the conversations between Nimah and Leah. I do think the book was more about Nimah dealing with the loss of her mother and the unresolved parts of their life. However, the mystery was still there in the background.
How to Kill a Crime Writer by Sarah Lotz was a good read!
