Disconnect

One thing I absolutely hate is the disconnect between the cover and the novel or worse yet the teaser and the novel.  Research suggests that over half the readers depend on a cover to help them choose a book.  I admit – I am one of them.  I have honestly admitted in reviews that I chose the book based on the cover.  Research also suggests that three quarters of people may avoid reading a book due to a poor cover design.  (Journal of Marketing and research from Thrift books and Little Brown Publishing)

This is all part of a field called neuromarketing: how visual hierarchy and color psychology trigger unconscious emotional connections in the reader (Pandemonium Publishing House)  There are specific colors and trends that are related to certain genres. Pinks, reds, whites and purples are expected covers for the romance genre, while black, gray, and dark blue using are expected on mysteries or thrillers. The trends in horror novels suggest covers that are dramatic to catch immediate responses.

So that is the rabbit hole I fell down in this afternoon and you know me – I am a sharer.  What do you think?

Elise sent in a review of a book called She Thought She was Safe.  Check out the cover – creepy picture and oversized bright lettering.  This book is a stand-alone and is a thriller. The main character has just lost her mother and her marriage and is looking for a new start.

This week’s interview is with Maisey Yates (You might have noticed she is one of my favorite authors as well – thanks to Elise!)  Elise’s interview includes the latest two books in the Rustler Mountain Series.  There is even a hint about who is going to be in the next book in the series.

Take time to read!
