Deadly Currents by Elizabeth Goddard has action, mystery, with a bit of romance.
The plot opens with Investigative journalist Cressida Valentine arriving in Hidden Bay after a worldwide journey to finish her late father’s manuscript on shipwrecks and ghost ships. As she tries to discover the story behind the “ghost ship” Specter’s Bounty, her only lead is a name her father left behind, Evelyn Monroe, the last person her father spoke with about the ship.
“The ghost ships are not supernatural. They are called this because of the mystery of what happened to the crew. I have taken some examples of real life. For example, in Indonesia there was a ship that was just floating and by the time a rescue was sent the ship was gone because the current carried it away. The ghost ship in this story, Specter’s Bounty was exceedingly old and rusted out.
She has decided to finish the book because she is at a crossroads. Cressida’s mother used her power and influence to prevent the story she had been working on from being published. Not only was she unable to publish her story but was fired. This left her blackballed in the industry leaving her unemployed and at loose ends. Having nothing else to do, she decides to finish her father’s book.

It seems someone does not want the book to be published and is willing to do anything to prevent the story from getting out. This leads to stalking, fire, attempted kidnapping, kidnapping and a Pirate’s Bash that the town hosts every year. As Cressida uncovers more about the ship, she quickly realizes that her research has placed her in the crosshairs of dangerous killers.

After the first attempt on her life, County detective Braden Sanders decides to investigate along with Cressida, with the ulterior motive to protect her. He has a hidden agenda. Cressida’s mother, Octavia Dane, hired him to protect her daughter and has pulled strings to assign him as County Deputy stationed at Hidden Bay, while he is a special agent with Diplomatic Security Services. What begins as a duty soon becomes personal with secrets and threats piling up.

This story has suspense, grave danger, friendships, and some romance. There are modern-day pirates, buried secrets, & plenty of twists.
