Cat’s People by Tanya Guerrero is a wonderful read. The book reminds us that everyone can make a difference and how one person can change one person’s perspective. The book is written in many different voices including a feral cat.
Tanya Guerrero imagined a world of a feral cat and the people that interact and help care for the cat. The cat (named Cat) is a black cat who has lived on the street for many years. He looks forward to the rainbow lady’s daily visit with food and water. Nuria (the Rainbow Lady) belongs to the Meow-Yorkers, a group in Brooklyn who takes care of the neighborhood’s stray cats. On top of Nuria, Omar the mailman also speaks with Cat and brings him treats. Then there is Bong, the Bodega owner who is grieving his wife’s death, who gives treats to Cat. Collin owns the brownstone where Cat hides. Collin eventually makes a house for Cat to hide in and helps take care of Cat.
However, around the story of Cat are how the people who help Cat start to form friendships. That is the real story, the forming of relationships that change each of the lives of Cat’s helpers. Each will need to reach out to the other, but Cat seems to give them strength to do that.
Cat’s People by Tanya Guerrero makes me feel warm and fuzzy. It makes me feel stronger about how people can connect, even when they seem to be so different. Cat’s People by Tanya Guerrero is a great read.
