A Tale of Two Dukes by Emma Orchard is an historical tale about a Viola and the two dukes that she is intricately entwined with. The story began in the present (1800s) and introduced us to the main characters and then we are brought back to the past to follow up how the characters got to that point.
Viola, a widow with twin boys, has been proposed to via letter from a man from the past. Richard Armstrong, a nephew to her late husband, writes a straightforward letter suggesting all the reasons they should be married. Viola’s companion is insistent that Viola decline, but she doesn’t.
As one of society’s unmarried, Viola is married off to a man up in his years. A man who is looking for a son, after all a Duke needs a son to pass everything onto. Viola’s husband however is still in love with his prior wife and is unable or unwilling to attempt to connect with her. She is often left on her own a lot of the time. Then the Duke of Winterflood invites his younger nephew to stay with them for a while.
