In Other Words by Pamela Fernandes is a small town romance that takes place in Boothbay and Edgecomb, Maine. The two main characters of a pianist and chef add the elements of the industries that cater to the outsiders that come up in Maine in the summer, while at the same time showing how much work it takes to “keep up”.
Trish Holt is a pianist. She had been living with her long time love when she was unceremoniously dropped. For her, this is just one more indignity that proves how unlovable she is. As a young adopted child and then as an adult, she has learned about her poor choices in relationships and blames herself.
Michael Quinten is a chef and Trish’s new neighbor. He has many of his own demons from his childhood and doesn’t believe in long term relationships at all. He has clawed his way to owning his own business.
Michael and Trish seem to be an interesting mix together. It is clear that there is some “spark” between them, but both carry so much baggage. Add in their families and there are enough characters that populate the novel.
I chose the book based on the cover and the setting in Maine. While the book was not a 4 or 5 star book for me, I did find the quirkiness interesting and wanted to see how the story worked out. In Other Words by Pamela Fernandes was a good read.
