Where the Wildflower Grow by Tereh Shelton Harris is an extraordinary novel that really addresses family, what makes a family, what would you sacrifice for family. Leigh as the main character experiences loss, struggles, and knows she has to keep moving. The novel mostly takes place in rural Alabama.
Leigh is chained into a transport van being moved from one prison to another when the bus goes off the road and lands in a body of water. Leigh’s journey starts by being the only survivor and she walks away. She finds a flower farm that needs help and finds a sanctuary for her. It is there that she finds others who care and help her face her challenges. Leigh starts to face herself and grows along with the farm. The past however is not gone.
The book is written smoothly. The reflections from the past are woven into the story that allow the reader to understand more about the characters. The characters are well drawn even with all the human foibles and scars. The sacrifices people make for their family. I truly believe Where the Wildflower Grow by Tereh Shelton Harris is a tremendous novel.
