She Didn’t See It Coming by Shari Lapena

She Didn’t See it Coming by Shari Lapena was a wonderful mystery with all sorts of red herrings and twists I didn’t expect.  The novel’s front cover is kind of creepy and might not be the best descriptor of the book.

Sam and Bryden were a couple.  They had a beautiful baby, great apartment, jobs and friends.  While Bryden decided to work from home one day, Sam was not surprised.  What was surprising was when she forgot to pick up the baby from day care.  What was even more surprising was when he got home, she was not there.  Her keys, phone, purse and computer are all right where they belong.  Clothes, jackets are there, but no Bryden.

This started a hunt for Bryden by the police.  People pitched in to help by watching the baby or just sitting with Sam.  A number of things did not make sense.  No video of anyone coming or going.  No obvious reasons for Bryden to be missing.  Slowly information starts to leak out and the reader is left wondering about various people around Bryden.  Each step made the noose tighten around Sam.  Bryden’s parents show up and automatically assume it is Bryden and there is something going on with Bryden’s sister, Lizzie was interesting.

I was surprised by the who of the mystery, not the why.  I was surprised by one of the minor characters upping the ante the way she did.  I was not happy with various suspicions and actions of some of the main characters.  This is the first book I read by Shari Lapena and I look forward to reading another. She Didn’t See it Coming by Shari Lapena was a good read.
