Too Old for This by Samantha Downing is a humdinger of a read! The novel opens with us meeting the main character, Lottie Jones. An older woman who has a grown child, retired, a group of friends and a church. A seemingly quiet life for an older woman.
Then Plum Dixon shows up on her doorstep, an investigative journalist. She has discovered much about Lottie’s past and wants to make a documentary about it. Lottie is quite troubled by this knowing that her world would implode because she also has a different identity than the one she has now. An identity that she keeps secret, until Plum Dixon shows up wanting to expose her. This is something that causes Lottie to act and act swiftly. Especially when more people show up wanting to know where Plum has gone.
Things are different as you age. Simple tasks require more thought, especially when compounded by new electronic devices. And then, the family shows up! The novel ekes out different things from the past in pieces to help form a complete and unexpected character. Each new item changes the picture in some way.
Too Old for This made me laugh and chuckle as Lottie’s planning of how to deal with various age related items. Her ability to think outside (way outside) the box impressed me! Beware of hammers. Too Old for This by Samantha Downing was a good read.
