The Summer Guests is the second book in a series called The Martini Club, by Tess Gerritsen. The Martini Club is a group of retired spies (CIA) who live in the same small town in Maine. The agents have been friends since they first went were introduced. Over the years their lives intersected at different times, but mostly they were alone in their work. When they retired, they all moved to the same small town in Maine.
This time a young girl (one of the summer guests) is missing and the police have focused on Maggie’s neighbor. The Chief of Police, Jo Thibodeau reluctantly allows the Martini Club some access to information. While they help search for clues including the background of various people, Jo is trying to work with the State Police Investigator, who is misogynous at his best.
While this book does focus on the characters in the Martini Club, we are introduced to other characters and their voices. I was surprised at how convoluted all the clues were and how to figure out which ones were real and which were red herrings. I also was surprised by how high and mighty some of the summer guests were as well as lacking empathy.
This is a great addition to The Martini Club series. I really enjoyed how Jo eventually gave up and joined the Club for dinner and drinks even though she was trying to solve the case. I enjoyed the mystery and as for “whodunit” – I was wrong for the majority of the novel.
The Summer Guests by Tess Gerritsen is a fun read!
