I often read through the lists of best sellers that I find in the newspapers each week. I find them interesting. I have found I rarely read the “new and upcoming literary novels”. Some – yes – most no. I find I am more likely to read books found on the mass market book list. The novels sound more interesting to me. I think this means I am a “low brow reader”. I can live with that. However, I did note this week Kristin Hannah has two books on the list, both of which I had read!
I also checked out the banned book list. Mostly to see how many books are on the list and which books are getting people all in a twist about converting children into immoral humans. It is hard to believe that we can subsume or assimilate children by books. But then again Siddhartha, The Red Pony, and The Outsiders opened my eyes.
It is not just books that expose people to characters who feel differently or don’t fall into an easy category. There are books that suggest that all people and their ideas deserve respect and understanding. Those are the books that need to be shared and accepted.
Meanwhile, I will happily hang out in the mass market best sellers! I encourage you to read whatever makes you happy.
Elise has sent in an interview with Yasmin Angoe. Not What She Seems is clearly a thriller that should hold your attention all the way through!
