My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite was a surprise read to me. I actually ordered the book because of the name and the shorter size compared to others (around 200 pages). What I read was a twisted novel set in Nigeria with unpronounceable names, an indifferent police force with a universal storyline. Here is the quote that caught me…
My Sister, the Serial Killer is a blackly comic novel about how blood is thicker – and more difficult to get out of the carpet – than water…
Korede and Ayoola are sisters. Korede has a job and goes to work in a medical facility. Her sister, Ayoola, calls her for help and Korede knows what to bring – cleaning supplies. Ayoola has killed another boyfriend and Korede is expected to help hide the evidence. In each case Ayoola has claimed she was being hurt by them, despite the fact that Korede does not see evidence of this occurring.
Ayoola shows up at Korede’s work one day and charms one of the doctors that Korede likes. Ayoola manipulates the man into asking her out and tying him to her, not her sister. Korede is left with a dilemma: save the man she has a crush on or save the sister who is everything to her.
My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite read quickly with short compact chapters. There were references to things I was not culturally aware of, but were not a huge deterrent to the twisted storyline! My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite was an interesting read!
