Drop Dead Famous by Jennifer Pearson delves into celebrity fame. Ever since Blair became famous, she has drifted away from her family, and is hiding secrets about them.

“The original spark for the book came from watching the sheer intensity of modern celebrity culture—especially around global megastars like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus —and wondering, what if? What if something unthinkable happened right at the height of that kind of fame, in the middle of all the noise, adoration, obsession, and pressure? That question really crystallized during the Eras Tour, when it rolled into the UK in summer 2024 and the public response was enormous. It made me think about how these artists can fill stadiums and be loved by millions—yet still be deeply vulnerable and, in some ways, alone. From there, the idea took shape: what if a megastar like that suddenly became the center of a crime scene? And that’s where Drop Dead Famous begins, with the murder of international pop star Blair Baker—and her sister Stevie determined to uncover the truth.”

The book opens with the death of singer Blair Baker. Her younger sister, Stevie, is determined to uncover her sister’s killer, no matter the cost. What begins as a search for answers about Blair’s death turns into a dangerous journey through the darker side of global fame. Now Stevie must navigate her past grief as she’s haunted by the unsolved disappearance of her niece, Mia along with her current grief of her sister’s death. Soon, Stevie begins to uncover dark secrets close to home, secrets that someone wants desperately to keep hidden.

“I wanted to explore how fame, celebrity culture, and media scrutiny can distort someone’s identity and their relationships with others. The story examines what happens when a person’s life stops belonging only to them, and how that loss of ownership affects both their sense of self and their connections with the people closest to them. When someone is constantly being watched, judged, and rewritten by headlines and online narratives, it becomes difficult to know where the public version of them ends and the real one begins. Stevie feels this acutely and she believes she lost her sister to the world. As her investigation unfolds, she begins to question whether she ever truly knew who Blair was.”

Stevie’s unlikely investigation partner is a huge Blair superfan, Colby, who helps Stevie look for answers. Together, they go through a long list of suspects. They do leg work, follow instinctive hunches, and investigate online. As the investigation moves forward a history of appalling crimes and cover-ups is uncovered. Ultimately, they must weigh the cost of exposing the truth.

“For Stevie’s character, I wanted to show her as someone who had grown up in the shadow of her famous sister. There are things that have happened in her past that have scarred her and she’s more guarded and doesn’t want to give parts of herself away like her sister did. But to balance her more reserved nature, I wanted to give her a dry sense of humor to make her likeable. I knew she would need to be tenacious – she is the driving force of the investigation after all.”

“While I wrote Colby as Blair Baker’s self-proclaimed number one fan and runs a Blair Baker fan site. She is very different to Stevie – louder and outwardly more self-confident. She has a challenging life with her mom that has made her tenacious and independent. She provides a lot of the levity in the book.”

The mystery will make readers guessing who is the culprit along with Stevie and Colby and the ending might shock some people.
