Women of the Dunes by Sarah Maine is a novel of three time periods and three main female characters. They are all on the same coastal land in western Scotland hundreds/thousands of years apart. It is a wonderful story where each happening one time is showing up in another time as part of the story. Most interestingly the way everything wraps up into one massive story is fascinating.
Libby Snow has been raised on stories of Ulla, a Viking maiden. The stories all centered around her brief life and encounter on the land. Her great-great-grandmother Ellen was the one who was obsessed with Ulla and passed the stories down to the next generation. Now Libby has a chance to actually participate in an archeological dig there where her ancestors once were.
What a story as Libby uncovers murder and mayhem and unexpected details including perhaps romantic interest for her. The story ebbs and flows like the tides as each new find leads to another piece of the puzzle.
I am always fascinated with archeology and digging information from the past. This story fed my fascination and then layered the subsequent stories on top. The story includes the family drama of the present and the past. It includes the pain of loss. I only wish there had been more information from the Viking era, but I was not displeased with that story line.
This is the second book I have read and enjoyed by Sarah Maine. I love the way her stories are written. Women of the Dunes by Sarah Maine is a great read.
